Photowalk through Columbia Pioneer Cemetery
After years of driving by, I finally took the opportunity to pull over and take a walk through Columbia Pioneer Cemetery (AKA Columbia Masonic Cemetery). It was established 1877 when it must have been out in the middle of nowhere. Since then, Portland’s urban sprawl has encroached and completely enclosed this little cemetery. What’s fascinating is the fact that it now sits surrounded...

Retro rangefinder reinvented
The Fuji FinePix X100 I was stoked when I saw this announcement earlier in the week from Fujifilm at Photokina 2010. The new FinePix X100 is a beautifully designed camera reminiscent of rangefinders popular from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Needless to say I love how it looks. The camera appears to successfully meld the design language of the earlier era’s mechanical cameras...

'A Year in Europe Wallpaper Gallery' iPad app
Since returning from our trip, I’ve looked for ways to express the creative inspiration I found in Europe. If you’ve listened to our podcast, you already know about my enthusiasm for photography. While I’ve offered my photographs as prints and have used them as the basis for other media (screenprints, paintings), I’ve been seeking other ways to distribute and display my photography in a unique...

iPhone 4 news round-up
So, I’m not sure what to be most blown away with. Because let’s face it, there’s a lot going on with the new iPhone 4. From the new get-out-your-microscope-to-see-the-pixels Retina Display, to the super-thin helicopter windshield glass body, once again we’re starting to live in the future thanks to Apple. And coming from my current iPhone 3G (that’s 3G, not 3GS), I...

HP buys Palm for $1.2 Billion
If people were to believe even a fraction of the many, many rumors circulating over the past decade, it would appear as if Palm was constantly on the verge of a takeover by one company or another. I can’t tell you how many times names like “Nokia” and “Dell” have been mentioned as possible buyers, never amounting to anything. More recently, hardware manufacturers like...

iPad review roundup
Apple has lifted the pre-launch press embargo and the early iPad reviews are in. Commence Operation: iPad Media Blitz! Here’s a selection of the most interesting pieces so far. And, also interesting is the fact that the majority of early reviews are positive. Shocking! Stephen Fry - for Time. Fry scores an impressive scenario - and hour with Steve and an iPad. Nice work, man. Love your...

8 great things about iPad...and some not-so-great
iPad is official. Fantastic? Sure looks like it. Magic? That’s probably a tad over the top. Perfect? What is? Here are a few observations which, since I didn’t get a Golden Ticket, are based strictly on the Apple web site, promo video and other eyewitness reports. 8 great things about iPad Surprising price – Honestly, I was prepared for iPad to be $999. So for it to have an...

lessons learned from emate, the forgotten apple...
It looks like this will be the week, after months — years — of speculation and rumors and wishful thinking, that we will finally learn about the next great thing from Apple. Some hope that this new product will be Apple’s answer to the netbook category of computers. But Steve Jobs publicly dismissed the notion of Apple producing a tiny, sub-$500 notebook. Of course, his apparent distain...

apple tablet prototype by frog design c.1983
Call me sentimental, but I have a soft spot for Apple product design of this era. And some of the design concepts from this time, like this one from frog design, remind me of props you might see in Blade Runner. The “Bashful” — named after the story-book elf in Snow White — was created alongside the Apple IIe as an extension of the Snow White design language that frog Founder Hartmut Essligner...

Are DSLRs so last decade?
The Micro Four Thirds format has a lot going for it, in my opinion. The notion of a smallish camera with interchangeable lenses is appealing, especially for travel or even as a serious walk-around option. The concept is somewhat analogous to that of the rangefinder, which was a very popular product category until the 1970’s. The only thing that I’m unconvinced about is price. The...

OLED prospects for Apple tablet looking dim
Tying in with my earlier post on displays, according to some analysis in a piece by ars technica, the notion of a 10-inch OLED in a near-future Apple tablet is more fantasy than reality. The problem with the recent rumor that Apple is hoarding 10-inch OLEDs, Young explained, is that “there’s no real production of 10.1-inch panels” for anyone to hoard. If anyone were to...

is there a pixel qi display in your future?
The other day I was thinking about display technology, as I often do. Actually, I’ve been thinking about displays even more than usual lately, because of the to-be-or-not-to-be Apple tablet (let’s call it, oh I don’t know, iBook for now). If said device does exist, will it use a now commonplace backlit active matrix LCD display? Or maybe something a little more cutting edge,...

See Objectified
This weekend I had the opportunity to view Objectified, a documentary film focusing on industrial and product design. The film presents interviews with several well known designers including Jonathan Ive from Apple, Tim Brown, David Kelley and Bill Moggridge from IDEO, Naoto Fukasawa, and former Braun designer Dieter Rams. I think my favorite segments were those with Ive (surprise, surprise) and...

palm announces updated phones, features and other...
Palm made a bunch of announcements today at CES. Of said announcements, I think some of them were quite good and some, well, not so great. Here’s my take. The good: Updated phones. Enter the pre plus and pixi plus. Compared to their predecessors, the pre plus offers 2x RAM totally 16GB and includes a Touchstone back cover (very cool), while the pixi plus now includes wifi (welcome to...

nerd alert: yes, I played D&D →
Surely, it will come as little surprise that I went through a Dungeons & Dragons phase when I was in the 5th and 6th grades. So it was a pleasant flashback moment when I saw these scans of D&D modules that I freely admit to owning, playing and enjoying. We were digging through the storage shed last weekend to find just the right box of Christmas decorations, when I should chance across...

HDR photography with iPhone 3GS
So this is pretty cool.Pro HDR enables you take HDR photographs with your iPhone 3GS. I imagine you need to really hold the phone steady for the multiple exposures necessary for true HDR photos, or use something like the Gorillamobile tripod. The example images are impressive looking, and at $1.99, it would be fun to play around with. Unfortunately, it requires the 3GS, so that means me and my...

cool tech: Blio
Things are starting to get interesting. Lots of Apple ‘iSlate’ rumors swirling as we approach the new year. Publishers creating demos of their products running on said yet-to-be-announced hardware. Amazon reportedly filling lots of pre-Christmas Kindle 2 sales. A variety of vanilla hardware manufacturers jumping on the tablet / ereader bandwagon. Everything seems to be pointing to...

cool tech: iPhone-in-iPhone augmented reality app
Today’s cool tech is an iPhone app apparently done for carrier Orange in Israel. We’ve seen lots of little augmented reality apps for the iPhone 3GS - apps that superimpose information and/or images over the live video from the phone’s camera. But I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this yet. Here’s a video of an iPhone rendering a seemingly functional iPhone...

Amiga world
I can’t begin to tell you how much of an influence, how huge an impact, the Amiga computer made on me. More than our first family computer, the TRS-80 Color Computer, more than the IBM PC, and especially during that time in my life, even more than the Macintosh. The Amiga captured my imagination and allowed me to learn, explore and express myself more than I thought would be possible with...
