Photowalk through Columbia Pioneer Cemetery
After years of driving by, I finally took the opportunity to pull over and take a walk through Columbia Pioneer Cemetery (AKA Columbia Masonic Cemetery). It was established 1877 when it must have been out in the middle of nowhere. Since then, Portland’s urban sprawl has encroached and completely enclosed this little cemetery. What’s fascinating is the fact that it now sits surrounded by a residential area, a bar, a gas station and at the intersection of Sandy Blvd. and Highway 205. I’m glad I made the time to take a little photowalk - here’s what I saw. Larger versions are on my studio site.

Retro rangefinder reinvented

The Fuji FinePix X100
I was stoked when I saw this announcement earlier in the week from Fujifilm at Photokina 2010. The new FinePix X100 is a beautifully designed camera reminiscent of rangefinders popular from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Needless to say I love how it looks. The camera appears to successfully meld the design language of the earlier era’s mechanical cameras (two-tone case, physical dials and switches) with today’s digital tech (large rear-facing LCD).
More than a pretty face, the X100 offers up some innovative tech, too. The Hybrid Viewfinder allows the photographer to instantly switch (yes, using an actual physical lever) between digital and true optical views. Super slick.
That said, this is definitely an enthusiast’s camera. Many people used to zoom-capable point-and-shoot cams will probably consider the f/2 23mm fixed focal-length lens (again, echoing an attribute common among rangefinders) a limiting factor. And if that doesn’t do it, the projected $1,000 price point might. But for me, the X100 is something I’ve been waiting for the industry to put out for some time. What’s old is new again.

‘A Year in Europe Wallpaper Gallery’ iPad app

Since returning from our trip, I’ve looked for ways to express the creative inspiration I found in Europe. If you’ve listened to our podcast, you already know about my enthusiasm for photography. While I’ve offered my photographs as prints and have used them as the basis for other media (screenprints, paintings), I’ve been seeking other ways to distribute and display my photography in a unique way.
I’m thrilled to introduce to you our new app – “A Year in Europe Wallpaper Gallery” for iPad. The app features 20 of my photographs from locations we visited on our trip. The images can be used in portrait and landscape orientations as background wallpaper on your iPad. I’ve included a personal comment with each image. You can also learn more about each location through built-in Wikipedia and Map links.
The app is now available in the Apple iTunes App Store:
Check it out and let me know what you think! And be sure to give it a review on iTunes.

iPhone 4 news round-up

So, I’m not sure what to be most blown away with. Because let’s face it, there’s a lot going on with the new iPhone 4. From the new get-out-your-microscope-to-see-the-pixels Retina Display, to the super-thin helicopter windshield glass body, once again we’re starting to live in the future thanks to Apple. And coming from my current iPhone 3G (that’s 3G, not 3GS), I can only imagine how snappy it will be with the A4 processor under the hood. Oh, and I’m sure all the new iOS4 features will be nice, too.
But I think for me, I can’t wait to try out the new 5-megapixel backside illuminated (are you kidding me?!) camera. I use my iPhone camera all the time. I find it is so handy to capture quick, unexpected moments with the twins. The increased quality will be great - as will the ability to capture 720p HD video!
And then there’s FaceTime. I think that Apple’s commercial pretty much sums it up. (Grab some Kleenex.)
